Engines in the Head

Another night of music has taken centre stage in Harpa as the Iceland Symphony Orchestra performs five individual pieces written and assembled by Icelandic artists. One piece that truly intrigued me was „Pons Papilloma“ by Ingibjörg Ýr Skarphéðinsdóttir, for its background and how personal of a story and feeling it is to her. „Pons“ means brain stem and „papilloma“ is a type of brain tumour. The piece feels like it’s meant to represent all the feelings after having surgery to remove the dreaded tumour. Ingibjörg herself says: “I felt like I was in a plane.” A moving piece that fully deserves its praise and gives an intimate and personal perspective on a traumatic part of someone’s life.
